Sketchbook

These days have been so busy with raising a child, teaching, managing a home, etc...We all have these daily responsibilities, but finding time to stay true to your passions in life take careful planning and adaptation.

This recent sketchbook drawing was created in between getting up for work, making coffee, showering, and heading out the door.  At least this elephant is making time for himself.  I will post more of these regularly.

Drawing inspiration from our National Parks

Last evening I was working in the studio and watching a PBS special on our National Parks.  Being a huge advocate of nature preservation and the wilderness, I eased back and let my subconscious take over as I began drawing. I tested myself by watching only a few seconds of a clip and sketching from memory.  This proved to be very exhilarating and kept me from focusing on too much detail.  I highly recomend watching this amazing series on our National Parks, Americas best kept secret!!

Watercolor Exploration

This week I purchased a really great book on watercolors and I felt inspired to dive right in.  It has been a while since I have used the medium and decided it would be a great departure from my everyday process.  Here are the results...

Penguins!!

The other morning before work I found myself drawing this little penguin.  It might have happened after watching all the advertisements for "Mr. Poppers Penguins", but this little guy was created from cut paper.  Focusing on only a bowling ball shape and small little eyes, I wanted to take my character through a series of short narratives.  With no particular theme in mind, this little guys was hopping from page to page.  These little sketches took me four days to complete, completing one a day each morning.  I was pleased with the results and explored a few new techniques in the process.

Enjoy!

New Children's Book In The Works!!

Hello All.  Seeing that this is my first blog, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some loose sketches for a new book I am writing and illustrating.  Since the arrival of my baby boy a few weeks ago, I have been very inspired by infant designs, patterns, and symbols.  So much so, that I have compiled thousands of sketches of baby animals and other miscellaneous characters.

One night I was sketching on sticky notes before bed and I subconsciously doodled this boy with a stuffed animal monkey.  I later posted this image on Facebook and my agent thought that   it would make a good narrative.  I continued drawing these characters and later started to apply rhyming text.  Before long....a story emerged!

I am still revising and editing content before sending this out to publishers, but I thought it would be cool to share some loose scribbles. Enjoy!!
